Why prop firm payouts get denied: the 8 causes, from the official rules

What the rules of APEX, Lucid, Topstep and Tradeify say about when a payout is denied or held, and the checklist to go through before you hit the button.

Almost every cause falls into three groups: not meeting the numbers (days, consistency, cushion), dropping below the threshold while the payout is pending, and how the money was made (hedging, trades lasting seconds, bots where they're banned). All three are avoidable if you read the rule before, not after.

We don't count complaints per firm: there's no reliable source for that. What follows is what the rules of APEX, Lucid, Topstep and Tradeify say, taken from their official help centers and checked on October 21, 2026. You can run your account's numbers through the “Can I request a payout yet?” calculator.

1. Not meeting the numbers

It's the most common cause and the only one a calculator can check. Each firm asks for a different mix:

The one that catches people: at APEX, exactly 50%. The text asks for “less than 50%”, although its example table counts it as met. If you're right at the limit, trade one more day.

2. Dropping below the threshold while it's pending

All three firms with a cushion or minimum balance say it: if your balance drops below the minimum after you request and before it's processed, the payout is denied. At Tradeify, on top of that, you can only have one open request and it can't be cancelled. The practical rule is the one Lucid gives: trade as if the payout were already taken out. Better still, don't trade that account until it's approved.

3. Requesting with open positions or at the wrong time

APEX won't let you request with open positions, and on Tradovate it checks in real time. The others don't say whether they allow it, so always request with everything flat. At Topstep you can only request during CME hours, and the day you request doesn't count toward the next cycle.

4. How the money was made

This is where the numbers can be perfect and the payout still fall through:

5. Identity, bank and country

They can all ask you to verify your identity before paying, and Tradeify, for residents of some countries, before it even gives you the funded account. APEX requires a bank account in your own name and in your country of residence. Topstep denies third-party accounts and ineligible countries; outside the US, its published method is an international wire. Tradeify pays through Rise and can require a verification interview (“Know Your Trader”): if your Rise onboarding or the interview is pending, there's no payout.

6. Too many accounts

With more than 20 PA accounts at APEX, counting your household, you lose payout eligibility. Lucid and Tradeify allow 5 funded accounts per person and household, and Topstep up to 5 XFAs. Lucid also allows only one profile per person.

7. Inactivity

An account that sits still can disappear with the profit inside. Tradeify wants at least one trade per week on each account; Lucid deletes the account after 30 days without trading; Topstep can close the XFA after more than 30 days; APEX wants 2 days of at least $50 net in every 30-day window.

8. The contract's fine print

APEX's home page promises no denied payouts, but its agreement gives it discretion and, if they conflict, the agreement wins. Tradeify's lets it hold a payout while it reviews it. Topstep can put a trader in its “Focused Trader Program”, and on the corrective path it denies pending payouts. It isn't common, but it exists: take screenshots of your dashboard the day you request.

Not a denial, but it feels like one

Before you hit “request payout”

  1. Run your numbers through the calculator: days, consistency, balance and cap.
  2. Every position closed.
  3. Check the margin left to the floor after the payout. If it's small, request less.
  4. Don't trade that account until it's approved, or trade as if the payout were already taken out.
  5. No opposite positions across your accounts, including correlated products.
  6. Check how long your trades last: most of your profit shouldn't come from trades lasting seconds.
  7. Bots only where the firm allows them.
  8. Identity verification done and a bank account in your name, in your country.
  9. Number of accounts within the limit, counting your household.
  10. A screenshot of your dashboard with the balance and days on the day you request.
To keep your feet on the ground: according to the firms themselves, 33.3% of Topstep participants at the funded level received a payout in 2025, and 28.5% at Tradeify between August 2025 and July 2026. The firms don't publish why the rest didn't get paid: losing the account before getting there, not meeting the conditions, or one of the causes on this page. Who gets paid covers what the ones who do get paid do differently.
