Out of every 100 traders who buy an evaluation, about 14 pass and about 7 get paid. The ones who get paid don't win more often than everyone else: they trade smaller, choose accounts with time, don't fight the rules and withdraw early.

How much they actually get paid
It's not a $50,000 check. Topstep says its average payout is around $2,300. At Apex, an independent review counted $294 million across 173,673 payouts: about $1,690 per payout. In the FPFX study, the average payout was about 4% of the account size, roughly $2,000 on a 50K account. The real money is in repeating $1,000-3,000 payouts while the account survives.
Seven things the ones who get paid have in common
- They trade small. With the 10-typical-losses rule, pass rates in our simulations rose from 64% to 91% without touching the strategy. Work out your size.
- They choose accounts with time. The same trader passes 98% of the time with no time limit and 17% with 30 days. The full guide.
- They don't chase the perfect day. If the daily loss limit blows the account and you trade 3× your size, pass rates fall from 40.7% to 17.4%. And consistency rules punish huge days. Daily loss limit · consistency.
- They have an edge after costs. With an 8-tick target and stop on MNQ and real costs, you need a 77.5% win rate just to break even. Many traders who get paid win less than half the time, but make more on each winner than they lose on each loser.
- They keep trying, with a method. Only 16.8% of Topstep evaluations were passed in 2025, yet 51.8% of traders got funded at least once: many pass on the second or third try. What matters is the cost per passed account, not the price of one evaluation.
- They withdraw early and often. Between 80 and 100 prop firms closed from January 2024 to early 2026, according to Finance Magnates. Profit in a funded account isn't yours until you're paid.
- They know their numbers. Win rate, average win and loss, worst streak. Without them you can't size positions or know if you have an edge. Try it with your trades.
Payout trivia
- Topstep says it pays more than 7,000 traders every week and has paid out more than $1.4 billion in total.
- Apex claims on its website to have paid more than $800 million to traders since 2022.
- At Topstep, only 0.71% of Express Funded accounts reached live trading in 2025: almost every payout comes from simulated accounts, with the firm's money.
- FTMO pays traders about 55% of its revenue, according to an analysis of its accounts by Trade Informer.
- The first payout is usually the hardest: almost every firm requires minimum days, consistency and a buffer before you can withdraw.
What success stories don't tell you
The stories firms publish are marketing: they pick the winners. For every trader who gets paid there are about 13 who don't, and almost nobody tells their story. Someone else's big payout says nothing about your odds. What decides them is your win rate, your average win and loss, your size and your account's rules.
